"Rabbit, Run" by John Updike.
Main Post:
I had no idea what I was getting into with this book. I had been reading "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis, and at one point he mentioned that he wanted to write as well as John Updike.
Seeing as how that book was about MLB, I got into my audible app, and chose the Updike title that had a basketball on the cover, foolishly assuming that I was on the trail of some kind of highschool basketball expostion. I thought at least it was sports-centric.
I could not have been more incorrect. This book tore my heart out.
Meet 26 year old Harry Angstrom, despicable fool, and protagonist of this emotional meat-grinder of an American novel. He is a former highschool basketball phenom, who grows up into a dead end job, a kid, and a young and intoxicated wife pregnant with the next.
The story is essentially a morality tale that gets straight to the corruption, and inconstancy of the main character. He is a coward and a terrible father. Consumed in self interest and shallow regard for his wife, he just runs away...
Without saying anything else about the plot, I just want to say how good of a writer John Updike is. He is the best American author in my opinion. Im American, live in CA, and i usually prefer English literature, but Updike might be the most naturally talented writer I have ever come across. His knowledge and expression of the human condition is unmatched. This book was perfect. It was perfectly concise. It's meaning was perfectly true and heartbreaking.
Top Comment: I agree wholeheartedly. I started with the Witches of Eastwick (also amazing) and then went on to Rabbit, Run. I had to put Rabbit, Run down because I was pregnant at the time & couldn’t take the rawness (wasn’t in the right frame of mind for a story about a man leaving his wife and baby!) But I will definitely return to it. Definitely give the witches of eastwick a try and you will see that he writes about women just as unsparingly and expertly as men.
Newbie: need help understanding slow generator charging times/determining daily Ah use
Main Post: Hi - I am a newbie working with a more electronic-savvy friend on tweaking my Victron setup. He’s wondering why my Honda 2200i generator is taking so long to charge my lithium batteries. Top Comment: I have two 100ah batteries, and as a for instance, yesterday I hooked up my Honda for 1 hr 32 mins via shore power and got 23.1 Ah, with the IP22 set to li-ion and 15V. The Honda is rigged up to run on propane. Any ideas/things I should check? Again - I am new to this, I’m learning, please ...
Ah jee whiz, that Blue Portal really saved my run. I don't know what I would have done without it! I got to skip all those fights and go right to the final boss. Thanks Blue Portal, very nice.

My AH already starting to run out of feast mats
Main Post:
Literally 0 auctions of Frenzied Fangtooth on the AH except the one I just put up. No Stringy Loins, only a handful of Meaty Haunch.
Salmon prices up to 700g each. Loach prices are at 100g, but absolutely hundreds of Auctions. Looks like demand for some mats are going to be too high to keep up with for some. Great time to make your own price and reset for some mats.

Wonderfully clever joke. Hadn't noticed it until now!
Run a microwave for 5 minutes on battle born 100ah battery?
Main Post:
How feasible is it to run a 600w microwave for 5 minutes on a battle born 100ah battery? Planning to hook up 300 watts of renogy solar panels into a charge controller then into the battery. The inverter is 1500 watts. Has anybody successfully done something similar?
Top Comment: You need to measure what the microwave actually draws in Watts using a Kill a Watt or similar energy meter. Some discussion on microwave efficiency: https://www.quora.com/How-many-amps-does-a-700-watt-microwave-use Assuming yours is 60% efficient then it would be actually drawing 600W ÷ .6 = 1,000W from the inverter. Inverters are typically 80-90% efficient, let's choose 85% to work with. 1,000W out from the inverter ÷ .85 efficiency = 1,176.5W from the battery. The battery is 12V, so 1,176W ÷ 12V = 98.04A. Battleborn is lithium, generally you don't want to take lithium batteries down below 30% SOC, or State of Charge, nor charge them up past 90% SOC, this maximizes cycle life. That means you can use about 60% of the rated Ah capacity before recharging. 100Ah x .6 - 60Ah. Running the microwave for 5 minutes, or 0.0833 hours, will use 98.04A x .0833h = 8.17Ah, so that's well within the available Ah. The Battleborn battery will also support 100A of continuous current, so it will meet the 98.04A demand, though barely. If your actual microwave and/or inverter are less efficient then you can exceed the discharge limit on the battery and possibly damage it or the BMS that's likely built into it.
